In a page out of the MMO’s “Free-to-Play strategy” book, Sony is releasing Killzone 3 multiplayer for free on February 28th. You’ll have access to the different multiplayer modes, original maps, and DLC maps, all for free. So what’s the catch? The catch is that you can only play up to Sergeant rank. After that point, you’ll have to pay $15 to unlock the rest of the ranks and continue play.
This is an interesting idea from Sony – surprising, I know – because players will be able to get a substantial amount of play time without having to pay a penny for it. This could set a nice precedent for those companies that have a quality multiplayer experience that players wouldn’t have to pay full price for.
