It’s always a sad time when a service goes off line. On a day that is for love and lovers, Konami has announced that the online portion of Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Online, will be drawing to a close on its fourth year anniversary, June 12. For those who don’t remember, MGO took the stealth action of MGS4 and applied a squad based multiplayer component to it, and it was awesome. From being able to master certain weapons and equipment, to having high ranking members of the community teach newcomers basics, MGO was very innovative for its time. I personally logged in a ton of hours myself in it. Having knife fights, CQC competitions and watching the adventures of Lt. Eddy made for a fun experience.
MGO will be shutting down in various stages starting with the shutdown of the online shop:
- March 21st 2012 16:00 JST (Japan Standard time) - Closing of the MGO Online Shop
- April 24th 2012 18:00 JST- Expansion Packs and Code Messages will be free to download. Reward shop equipment will be free as well.
- June 12 2012 23:59 JST-End of online service.
While MGO is shutting down, there’s almost a good three months before it goes offline. Plus Konami is nice enough to give the expansion packs, codec messages and reward equipment for free so that everyone can enjoy the final months.
