Skyrim wins Game of the Year at 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards
Posted on February 10, 2012 by OG

Not surprising anyone, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim won the Game of the Year award at the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs) show that was streamed last night at DICE 2012.  Hosted by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, the IAAs are the Academy Awards of video games with awards being voted on by professionals within the industry.  Skyrim won five awards total including RPG/MMO of the year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Story, and Gameplay Engineering to go along with the Game of the Year award.

Uncharted 3 was also a big winner taking awards for Art Direction, Visual Engineering, and Animation.  Portal 2 won some more “interesting” awards including Original Music Composition, Character Performance (for Wheatly, of course) and Connectivity which is a new category for games that allow for players to interact with other players and across platforms, most likely for the ability for players on the PS3 to play with players on the PC.

A couple of surprises for me were Star Wars: The Old Republic winning Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay beating out Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12 winning Sports Game of the Year because it’s still freakin’ soccer, and Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure winning Outstanding Innovation in Gaming.  Probably the biggest dud award was Fruit Ninja Kinect winning Casual Game of the Year.  You know casual gaming is on the decline when the best you can do is a mediocre port of an iPhone game on the Kinect.

Along with the awards for different games came individual awards to those that have made an impact in the industry.  Epic Games Tim Sweeney was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his work on the Unreal Engine, and Ed Logg won the Pioneer Award for his groundbreaking games in the dawn of the arcade such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Gauntlet.  Here's a full list of the winners:

What do you think of the Gamestop settlement in California?

Gamestop got exactly what it deserved. They've been screwing over gamers for too long.
The lawsuit was stupid. Consumers should have known better, and now, Gamestop will start reducing prices of trade-ins.
