Evo 2012 lineup and tournament season announced
Posted on January 03, 2012 by OG

During a special live Wakeup Shoryuken hosted by Skisonic and Keits, Evo Boss Mr. Wizard announced the game lineup for Evo 2012.  The games are:

  • Street Fighter X Tekken
  • Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Version 2012
  • Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3
  • Soul Calibur V
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Mortal Kombat 9

Considering the outlook for fighting games in 2012, that list does have some surprises with the exception of Super Street Fighter 4 AE 2012 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  Soul Calibur V is the least surprising of the bunch as most expected the game to be added with its release only a few weeks away.  Those that have played the game do feel that it’s goes back to the Soul Calibur II roots with some updated improvements.  King of Fighters XIII would be next in surprises in that the game does not have the huge impact in the U.S. as it has in other countries. However, with the positive reception the game has been getting from fighting game fans, I expect to see more U.S. players competing in this game than any other KoF game.  Mortal Kombat 9 is quite a surprise considering how the support from the game has tapered off after Evo 2011.  Then comes the big surprise, and the choice that is worrying players, in Street Fighter X Tekken.  Considering that the game won’t be out till March and there’s the whole question about the “Gem System”, everyone is waiting and seeing what will happen.

Unfortunately, a game that didn’t make the cut was BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend which will be released in February.  Blazblue II did make the cut last year and had a fair amount of competitors.  This year also marks the end of Tekken 6 which has been a game of Evo for the past 2 years.  Mr. Wizard explained that they could add Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but it would be incredibly unfair for the vast majority of players that don’t have an arcade nearby that has an actual TTT 2 machine.  Skullgirls was another hopeful game for Evo 2012 that didn’t make the cut either even though it has been a focus in the fighting game community having demos of the game at several events.

Mr. Wizard also announced the Road to Evo 2012.  Like last year, the Road to Evo 2012 will consist of several regional tournaments with the top finishers will receive Evo points that will give those with the most points ideal seeding in their respective games.  Multiple changes have been made from last year such as more tournaments, all games will reward Evo points instead of just being Super Street Fighter IV AE and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and a simplified point structure.  Here’s the list of events:

  • Apex Tournament Series, New Brunswick, New Jersey Jan 6-8
  • Winter Brawl, Philadelphia, PA Feb 18-19
  • OzHadou Nationals X, Sydney, Australia Feb 17-19
  • Final Round, Atlanta, GA March 2-4
  • South East Asia Major, Bugis Arcade, Singapore Mar 17-18
  • NorCal Regionals 10, March 24-25
  • Texas Showdown, Houston, Texas April 6-8
  • PowerUp 2012, Cincinnati, Ohio April 13-15
  • Team Mad Catz Championships, San Diego, CA April 13-15
  • Toryuken, Toronto Ontario, Canada May 4th-6th
  • Season’s Beatings: Summer Slam, Columbus, OH May 5th
  • Northwest Majors, Seattle, WA May 26th
  • Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 8, Chicago, IL May 25.27
  • Montreal Annual Tournament, Montreal, Canada June 3-4
  • East Coast Throwdown, Morristown, NJ June 9-10
  • CEO 2012, Orlando, FL June 15-17
  • Midwest Championships 2012, Nashville, TN June 22-24

Mr. Wizard commented that while that is the definite list of games, more announcements will be made regarding Evo 2012 in the next several months.  Evo 2012 will be happening July 6-8, 2012 in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
