VGAs 2011 Overview
Posted on December 10, 2011 by MikeV

A lot of you stated on our poll Will you be watching Spike TV’s 2011 Video Game Awards with the answer “Hell no! The show is an insult to gamers and the industry.” After how last year’s show went, I don’t blame you for thinking that. But to my surprise (I might be the minority here) the VGAs were actually pretty good. Enjoyable I dare say. Sure there were some annoying moments, such as the teabagging if the speaker goes over a minute (which was kind of funny when the MW3 producer got t-bagged), lame jokes and the annoying pick the cover athlete for the new Blitz game. But overall it was an improvement from last year. That and having a year full of great games to have as nominees helps too. Speaking of nominees, let’s take a look at tonight’s winners:

Game of the Year, RPG of the Year, Studio of the Year- Skyrim, Bethesda Games

Character of the Year, Best Xbox 360 Game, Best Action Adventure Game, Best Adapted Video Game- The Joker, Batman Arkham City

Gamer God- Blizzard Entertainment

Best PS3 Game, Best Graphics, - Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Best Wii Game, Best Motion Game- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Best Male VO, Best Female VO, Best Multiplayer, Best PC Game, Best DLC- Stephen Merchant (Wheatly), Ellen McLain (GLaDOS), Portal 2

Best Downloadable Game, Best Original Score, Best Song In Game- Bastion, Build that Wall

Best Fighting Game- Mortal Kombat

Best Indie Game- Minecraft

Best Driving Game- Forza Motorsport 4

Best Individual Sports Game- Fight Night Champion

Best Handheld/Mobile Game- Super Mario 3D Land

Most Anticipated Game- Mass Effect 3

Trailer of the Year- Assassin’s Creed Revelations E3 2011

NFL Blitz Cover Athlete- Ray Rice

And these are your VGA 2011 winners. So what do you think? Do you agree with the results, or are there some questionable results? Or do you just don't give a two cents about this? Personally, I like the show. The host was alright, and seemed to know enough about gaming to be able to make his jokes, as lame as they were. Production value was pretty good, I bet it wasn't cheap to have those AG reality figures on stage and live. The awards were trimmed down to the essentials, which wasn't bad, but the show felt rushed since it was only an hour long. This doesn't include the pre-show events.

As for the awards one that I really must question is Best Motion Game. Skyward Sword shouldn't have gotten it. Its a good game, but really, Best Motion Game? Personally it should have gone either to Child of Eden or Dance Central 2. As for the rest, that's another blog post for another time.
