We reported yesterday that War Z has come to Steam amid a cyclone of controversy over recent customer service complaints and regarding the current state of the game which could be summed up as "incomplete." The latest controversy that it getting players to form angry mobs is regarding today patch for the game:
Xmas items have been added... have fun looking for Easter eggs
Enabled early revival
Revival time is set to 4 hours
Hardcore mode now properly functions: if you die, your character dies permanently
Zombie optimizations (should help with PC's that have more than one CPU thread)
Updated PhysX to help us find additional crashes from PhysX.
Colorado map terrain polishing
Fixed a bug that allowed users to pick items up through walls
Fixed a big that did not properly draw in your character model when first logging in
The one in particular is the revival time. Just yesterday, the time was set for an hour and now it's four hours. So if you die, you'll have to wait four hours to start up again. That right there is fairly deplorable as no other MMO has that kind of revive time, however that is still not the biggest issue. To revive yourself before the four hours, you would have to pay in-game currency(GC), and one way to get in-game currency is buying it. For 50GC, the equivalent to $0.33, you can revive yourself right away.
For a game that is not "free-to-play," this particular kind of microtransaction is definitely concerning. We'll see how the current outcry over this particular transaction will affect the popularity of the game and if Hammerpoint Interactive will address the matter.
