What we could expect tonight on the 2012 VGAs
Posted on December 07, 2012 by Drew Bergmark

From dashing rumors of the next Xbox console being announced to the annual Snoop Dogg performance, Spike’s Video Game Awards will entertain you but will the announcements be there that you want? With literally minutes to go before the show starts, I can’t wait to hear what’s coming. From Valve trolling us earlier this year with Half-Life 3 polos to hearing that Star Wars: Battlefront III was nearly complete, the predictions for the VGAs are limitless even being less than 6 hours away from the actual show.

Back in 2009, the studio making the latest iteration of the Star Wars Battlefront series was closed and recent allegations have come out saying that the game was nearly complete yet we don't see it on store shelves anywhere. Last year at the VGA’s, Lucasarts unveiled an obviously next generation title named 1313. This year at the VGA’s, I predict the official announcement for First Assault, a game containing story during the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire; perhaps, it could be the Battlefront III that fans have been expecting.
Kept quiet despite domain registrations surfacing to the press at the end of August, First Assault had a leak of it’s box art at the beginning of October leading us to believe that the possibility of LucasArts keeping another title secret were true as the domain names matched others via WhoIs. The fact that we haven’t heard anything about a PC or PS3 version leads me to believe that either Sony keeps things better underwraps or it might just be a 360 exclusive. Either way, I can bet we’ll find out the truth later tonight.

Back in early October, the industry’s most popular personality left his development studio that changed the industry forever. Cliff Bleszinski left Epic Games just as his reputation couldn’t get any bigger. Speculation for where Cliff was going has been as popular as the mainstream media covering Kate Middleton’s pregnancy. When Cliff went to visit Double Fine’s Tim Schafer, the Internet blew up with excitement. He also visited Activision & visual effects studio Zoic with plenty of other rumored companies to call his new home.
A week later, he tweeted saying that he could fix Resident Evil. During November, he visited Ubisoft apparently getting a decent offer. Where is the industry’s biggest developer going to end up? To atone for previous sins to the hardcore audience, perhaps we could see an exclusive announcement for where Cliff is going to end up.

Despite what I’ve previously said about the announcement for Microsoft’s newest console, I think tonight might be the night that we finally get confirmation on Durango or whatever name you’ve heard it called finally get revealed. Xbox 720 or Xbox 8, Microsoft has a chance to take the show and anticipation with an announcement but would it be the best business decision? With little over two weeks left of the holiday shopping season, would an announcement of the Xbox successor affect the market enough to drop sales number for Microsoft’s console?
My friend over at Game Over Nation thinks it’s a possibility. Personally, I’d like to at least see a prototype so we can start to talk about the future of the industry instead of dwelling on this current generation that has dragged out for seven years now. With only 90 minutes left until the show starts, I want to hear what you guys expect from the show tonight. Any announcements you anticipate? Let me know in the comments down below!
