For the first time in the history of Tougeki (Super Battle Opera or SBO) an American won first place in one of the games that was in the tournament. After going through tough competition, controversy and feelings of animosity towards the foreign players, EG Justin Wong rose through the ranks to win it all in UMVC3. Justin faced some of Japan's toughest UMVC3 players with his team of Wolverine, Storm and Akuma.
American players both at SBO and here in the states were filled with excitement with the news that the US finally had their first SBO champion. There were also those who "discredited" Wong's win being as "free" since UMVC3 is a game that is dominated mostly by America players. While yes it is true that UMVC3 is an American dominated game, saying that the win was free is doing disservice to the Japanese players, the other non-American foreign players that competed and Justin Wong as well. These guys put in hard work and dedication to fight in one of the most prestigious fighting game events in the world. While SBO's significance is being called into question after all of the controversy, this still does not take away from Wong's victory nor the rest of the players that competed. So congratulations JWong, you deserve the victory, and here's hoping that Tougeki gets better organized if they want to continue to be relevant.
