In their fiscal year 2012 report, Capcom explained why they had made less income in 2012 than they did in 2011 by more than a billion Yen. One particular point that stood out was the less than expected sales of Street Fighter X Tekken. In the Q & A, Capcom said this:
Sales of "Street Fighter X Tekken" have fallen short of our plan. We believe one of causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time.
I'm reminded of my article that I posted last June "Are Fighting Games Going the Way of Music Games?" where I pointed out that just like the music games genre, there was a lot of fighting games coming out in a short period of time. The focus of that article was Street Fighter X Tekken, which is a fun game, but may have been the game that was just a little too much for gamers to support. It also didn't help the backlash they received over the DLC debacle for the game. Could this be the end of the "fighting game revival?" I hope not.
