Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has issued a public explanation regarding the previously announced splitting of Netflix’s DVD-by-mail and streaming services, and in the process has announced that the new service will now be dealing in video games!
Following the earlier announcement of the decision to separate the streaming portion of the Netflix and the DVD section, and charge customers for both, instead of one complete package, Netflix customers were understandably unhappy. Hastings has attempted to placate some of the more irate by explaining that he change had to come about to allow Netflix to continue growing and to continue being great at what they do.
Most of the explanation continues on in the same vein, but the important message for readers of this site, is that the new mail service, named Qwikster (which sounds to me like some 80’s kids cereal) will offer a Video Game upgrade option, much like the already-offered Blu-Ray upgrade. Only current-gen consoles will initially be supported, so Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, and there is no mention if support for other consoles is in the pipeline or not. Qwikster will be based on the same website and service as the by-mail portion of Netflix was previously, so there shouldn’t be a massive change to those who currently subscribe..
