Sony to offer ID theft protection to all users for free
Posted on May 06, 2011 by

In addition to the free month of PSN+ and free content, Sony has also announced that they will be providing all users free identity theft protection from Debix, Inc called AllCleare Plus, at no cost to users. Activation code will start to be sent out the next few days and users will have until June 18th to activate the account. Once activated through Debix’s "AllClear ID Plus" website, users will have 1-years’ worth of ID protection.

The details to the program Sony includes some of the following:

  • Cyber monitoring and surveillance of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer’s personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services.

  • Priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists. If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer’s identity.

  • A $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event.

Now let’s break this down: Say the cost of this service is $10 a month for a year. That would total up to roughly $120 a year. Now multiply that to 77 million accounts Sony says that have been accessed by the attacks. For one year Sony will be paying $9.24 billion for their users to have ID theft protection. Now this is only a rough estimate and does not take into account multiple accounts one user may have. Even if only accounts with credit card information are counted, this is still a huge loss in revenue to Sony. A lost they are willing to take for their users.

In my opinion, Sony is going the extra distance for their uses in the wake of the security breach. I personally think that Sony, other than reporting to us the situation of the attack, does not have to give us any compensation of any kind for time loss when the network is down. Maybe Free Realms, DCUO and Qriocity users should get some form of compensation, but that’s it. But, like I said, that’s just my opinion.

What do you think of #Gamergate?

There's a problem in the industry that is being covered up by those with the loudest voices.
It's nothing but a bunch of misogynists hating that women are talking about games.
Can't we all just get along?
