Gears of War 3 Beta Impressions
Posted on May 02, 2011 by Original-Gamer.com

Gears of War has been a hugely popular franchise, but its multiplayer side has been plagued with game crippling glitches that make competitive play almost impossible. Knowing its track record hasn’t been good so far, Epic is really looking to change gamer’s opinions by taking plenty of care. Gears of War 3’s public beta is a first for the series, and gives us an early peek at new guns, maps, and mechanics.

There are been a couple of new moves added to the basic arsenal that will make anyone smile.

Whenever you hop over a wall, your character kicks the opponent, stunning them and giving you the opportunity to finish them off with your melee attack or whatever you choose. It’s no longer a battle of who can blast each with a shotgun first. And while Meat Shields are nothing new, but now you can strap a grenade to the hapless soul you have in your grasp and kick them into your enemies.

Among the new weapons are the Digger and the Longshot. If you haven’t seen it, imagine Bugs Bunny burrowing underground, then popping up and blowing up in your face. Diggers will loosen up the tightest of trenches, and burrow under cover. If you know it’s coming though you can roll out of the way. On the other hand, the Longshot is a laser sniper rifle I prefer to call the One Shot because that’s all you need. It takes a second or two to fire, and you can see its targeting line across the map, but it’s a major threat anywhere on the battle field.

The retro Lancer and sawed off shotguns round out the starter weapons. The retro Lancer trades range and accuracy for power and a vicious melee attack. Holding down the B button will make your character charge at opponents and impale them. Sawed off shotguns have almost no range, but it’s very much an all or nothing attack at the close range. If you hit, they are 99 percent dead, but if you miss, you’re going to take forever to reload, even with an active reload. The new maps are great fun, but spawn points are limited, and there needs to be changes on how they work. The Thrashball map is great fun, but a really good team ended up pushing us right into the locker room where we spawn. It became pretty much a slaughter. Also, during a Capture the Leader match, the spawn points changed randomly. Our leader was chilling in our base, but suddenly the enemy spawned behind him.

New to the maps are interactive objects and events. Dust clouds randomly appear on the mines, turning everything into pea soup. The score board on Thrashball can be shot down and crush people. I hope more of these events are implemented in the final version, so long as they can all remain competitive and not get too silly that they unbalance the game.

Lastly, everyone seems to be shotgun happy. Granted, the chainsaw has always been a risky choice, but it still sucks to get blasted while I’m cutting someone in half. But it still sucks to get the jump on someone and they can still get you with the shotgun. Plenty of players I partied with were calling them overpowered, but I know they have their place in the game. But even then, I find them to be pretty damn strong.

Anyways, at this point in time anyone can get in the beta by preordering at Gamestop. And you can unlock special gun skins and characters in the retail version only by playing the beta. So head down there and put five bucks down. You won’t regret it.
