Killzone 2 Review

Killzone was originally designed to be the "Halo-killer" but it ended failing. Killzone 2, on the other hand, had much more to live up to than just being a "Halo-killer". The game itself became synonymous with the extent of the PS3's power becoming an example of how much more advanced the PS3 was over the 360. Possibly the most anticipated game on the PS3, aside from Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 has an unprecedented amount of hopes for game system that hasn't been seen since Final Fantasy 7 was planned for the PSX.

As the game starts the ISA sets up their cruiser airship 'The New Sun' up in the clouds of Helghan, Sev and the rest of the ISA invade the ground. The invasion seemed successful until an arch grid is activated in the city of Pyrrhus and majority of the first wave convoy is obliterated. Alpha team tracks down the power source of the arch grid to Tharsis Refinery.

While Sev and Rico go to find information on the arch grid, Garza, Natko and scientist Evelyn Batton are captured by Helghast. Sev and Rico go to save them and Rico acts too quickly and Garza gets wounded and dies not long after. The ISA retreat to The New Sun. Helghast invade The New Sun and Helghast Colonel Radec Gets to their bridge and kills both Evelyn and most of the invasion fleet. The New Sun is destroyed but the alpha team escaped.

The New Sun crashes into Tharsis Refinery destroying the power grid in the city. The ISA try to regroup near Visari's palace in Phyyhus but Radec detonates a nuclear bomb within the city and most of the ISA forces on Helghan are killed. Alpha team and the remaining ISA assault the palace during the assault Sev and Rico defeat Radec who commits suicide shortly after. Sev and Rico find Scholar Visari waiting for them. He informs them that the war is far from over and if they capture or kill him the Helghast would remember him as a martyr and fight harder with even more determination than ever. Rico kills Visari, Sev leaves the palace and sees a giant Helghast fleet destroying what is left of the ISA fleet, Visari wasn't lying and the war is far from over.

Killzone 2 plays very smoothly with tight controls that feel very familiar. The only complaint I have is the iron site aiming is clicking the right sick. I would have preferred the left button but it's no big deal. Killzone 2 features a duck and cover system fully in first person and it actually works the only thing in this game that isn't first person is the vehicle battles. Also there are a lot of great gun fights in this game, The AI isn't stupid and can kick your ass. Not to spoil much but the final battle is epic.

The graphics in Killzone 2 really shine. Its one of the best console games I've ever set my eyes on. It puts Call of duty 4 to shame though doesn't compare to Crysis but honestly what does? Character models are well done, environments are detailed greatly and overall it looks near perfect.

Playing online is chaotic, Explosions everywhere, rapid gunfire, and lots of blood. Killzone 2 supports up to 32 players online with 6 unlockable classes and 8 maps. If there aren't 32 players in a game the host can add in bots to fill spots until more people join which is a neat feature. A great new feature is the change on the fly option for game modes. This allows players to go from a death match game to a capture the flag without needing to stop the action.

In the end this game surpassed my expectations by a mile and I can't get enough of it. It delivered every aspect that makes a game great and succeeds in every category. Go out and buy this game and get ready for a lot of fun.
