PSP: Ratchet and Clank - Size Matters Review

Another Ratchet and Clank game. The difference this time is that it isn't developed by Insomniac! High Impact games is the developer this time around and let's just hope quality does matter to them. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters was first released for the PlayStation Portable and then it was ported to the PS2. I have played both versions and I'm going to give my positives and negatives to both games.

Size Matters takes place after Ratchet: Deadlocked and Ratchet and Clank are on vacation. While relaxing on the planet Pokitaru, taking a much needed break, a girl named Luna appears and asks Ratchet to show off some of his moves so she can get some pictures for a report. Ratchet, being the kind Lombax he is, agrees and beats down on some baddies. In the process of this, Luna gets herself kidnapped. Go figure. Ratchet and Clank now must go and save Luna and unknowingly to them, save the galaxy, once again. The story is the same in both versions.

The game plays very much like the first Ratchet and Clank on the PS2. As always Ratchet offers some cool gameplay types. Sometimes Clank will have to venture on his own solving slight puzzles. Clank also has a space level where you play as Giant Clank and fly around shooting enemies, these sections are very fun. Many other mini-games are present such as a destruction derby and a Lemmings like game. Like the very first one. You shoot with the "Circle" button and jump with "X". Weapon select is "Triangle." and "Square" is your wrench. A downside of course is that the PSP has only one analog stick, that means you have to use the shoulder buttons "R" and "L" to navigate the camera. This takes some getting used to but once you play for a few hours you'll be a master at combat. The controls for the PS2 version are much better and play exactly like the other PS2 games, only with tons of small glitches.

The graphics and sound on the PSP version are great for a handheld and you really notice the work put into the game. The game really shines while playing as Giant Clank in the flying missions. Tons of enemies and flashy special effects are going on at once. The sound is very Ratchet and Clank with catchy tunes and funny dialogue. The PS2 version however is port and that's it. No upgrades of any kind besides the second analog stick. The graphics are bad, the sound is actually worse on the PS2, and really, they could've done much better. The game has skill points and small untouchables that will keep you coming back until you've completed the whole game and received everything. The PSP version also has online play. You can play with four other friends locally or online. The online is good with a few maps and modes but there are no punishments for dropping out of a game before it is completed, so if you're winning the other player can quit and your rank doesn't go up at all.

The PSP version of the game is a great achievement in presentation and gameplay. The camera can be annoying sometimes and when people drop out of online matches, you really want to kill somebody, but the game is a solid PSP title and a must buy for Ratchet and Clank fans. On the PS2 side however it is worthy of a rent to see if you like it. The PS2 version has poor graphics and sound and it doesn't have any online multi-player. Glitches also hold it back. The PS2 version has to be the worst Ratchet and Clank games to ever be on a console.

Overall - PSP: 8.6/10.0
