Now we come to, wait for it, this title is long... Resident Evil Director's Cut Dual Shock Edition. Whew! Anyway, this title was a budget release of the Director's Cut released in 1998 with bare bones Dual Shock rumble and analogue support. This version is held in contempt by most RE fans due to the new symphonic score.
Let's get this over with quickly. The story is the same, still censored. The graphics, sound effects, gameplay, item placement, enemies, challenge and replay is all the same. Identical. Now let's talk about the music.
No one really knows why, but the superlatively creepy original score has been entirely replaced. I do hate this decision, but I am left to wonder why. This is as such because all the pieces have no comparison. Not only are the new pieces less musically exciting, they are sampled at a lower rate and sound tinnier as a result. A total blunder in the sound department.
The Dual Shock edition is only a necessity if you've never played any version of RE EVER. I haven't checked prices lately, but being a budget release, it is probably still the cheapest way to get your hands on the original Resident Evil, if you live in the US.
This perfect opportunity to correct the mistakes of the earlier Director's Cut was passed up by Capcom, perhaps proving that this version was never meant to be anything more than a double-dip.
